If you’re looking to dress up your toast or cheese board, these spiced caramelised onions and figs are a game-changer. Sweet, sticky, a little spicy, and totally irresistible, they turn even the simplest snack into something that feels fancy (without the effort). Perfect for impressing friends… or just spoiling yourself.

Ingredients

  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • ½ tsp black mustard seeds (optional)
  • ½ tsp fennel seeds (optional)
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, finely sliced
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • Figs
  • Goats cheese
  • Crunchy toast
  • Sliced chillies to serve

Step 1

Heat a generous splash of oil in a small frying pan. Add the whole spices and turmeric, letting them sizzle for about 30 seconds.

Step 2

Stir in the sliced onions and cook over high heat for 5–8 minutes until they turn golden and caramelized. Add the garlic and cinnamon, then continue cooking for another 3 minutes.

Step 3

Pour in the apple cider vinegar to deglaze the pan, then season with salt and a touch of sugar.

Step 4

Layer your crispy toast with creamy goat’s cheese, caramelized onions, sliced figs, and fresh chilies.
