The humble Tomato Sandwich is a simple yet iconic dish that celebrates peak-season tomatoes. With just a few basic ingredients—juicy, ripe tomatoes, soft bread, mayonnaise, and a sprinkle of salt—this sandwich captures the essence of summer in every bite. Originating in the American South, the Tomato Sandwich is all about letting the tomatoes shine. You can enjoy the classic version or elevate it with toppings like fresh basil, furikake, or cracked black pepper. I’m absolutely hooked on Jules take on them!

Ingredients

  • Kewpie mayonnaise
  • Furikake seasoning
  • Shichimi powder
  • 1 ripe tomato
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 slices of bread (crusts on for sturdiness)

Step 1

Spread a generous layer of kewpie mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread.

Step 2

Sprinkle furikake seasoning and shichimi powder over the mayo on one of the slices.

Step 3

Slice the tomato and layer the slices evenly over the seasoned mayo.

Step 4

Season the tomato with a pinch of salt. Top with the other slice of bread, mayo side down.
